BEN NÚÑEZ SR. SCHOLARSHIP

Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS is now accepting applications for the Ben Núñez, Sr. Scholarship opportunity. Up to three $500 scholarships are being offered to graduating high school seniors or Tillamook County residents interested in pursuing a career in oceanography, marine conservation, estuary health, watershed ecology, or a closely related field. Awards are made at the discretion of the WEBS board. This scholarship opportunity is open to any resident or graduate of Tillamook County schools and will be allocated via the Tillamook Education Foundation.

Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS works to build a community of environmental stewards around Netarts Bay watershed and the areas between Cape Meares and Cape Lookout. We use educational events, programs and activities, as well as published research, to enhance knowledge of the important and unique qualities of the Netarts Bay Area. WEBS is committed to supporting local students who care about our natural resources and are looking to start a career in science and conservation. “The Ben Núñez, Sr. Scholarship has helped me focus on what I am passionate about, instead of financial strain, and has given me a steady sense of encouragement no matter how far from Tillamook my goals take me,” says Naomi Travis, 2024 scholarship recipient.

The scholarship, now in its fourth year, is named after long-time board member, Ben Núñez Sr., who passed away in 2022. Núñez served as the Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS treasurer for many years and continued to be a strong ambassador for the non-profit upon resigning from the board. His legacy lives on through his generosity and we are delighted to award multiple scholarships in his name.

The application deadline for the 2025 Ben Núñez, Sr. Scholarship 11:59 pm on April 20, 2025.

CERT training

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during CERT exercises, members can assist their community or workplace following an emergency event when professional responders are not immediately available to help.

This the basic CERT class. It requires completion of the online course (approximately 12 hours, but it is at your own pace), 4 evenings of hands-on practice and a final scenario response.

To register, go to:

Green Crabs in Netarts Bay: Challenges and Opportunities

Cracking the code on green crabs; discover how these crabs are impacting local estuarine and marine species.

Join Friends of Netarts Bay Watershed, Estuary, Beach and Sea (WEBS) and visiting scientist Dr. Sylvia Yamada at this informative presentation to learn how the green crab range expansion is impacting Netarts Bay.

These small but voracious crabs disrupt ecosystems by preying on shellfish and tearing up the eelgrass. They were first introduced to the West Coast via San Francisco Bay in the 1980s. They have since spread throughout estuaries and bays in California, Oregon, and Washington; recently reaching as far north as Alaska.  Their high tolerance for a wide range of temperatures and salinity has allowed them to become a global challenge.

So how concerned should we be?  Marina Dreeben, WEBS Stewardship Coordinator invites you to “join us in-person or virtually to learn about the current status of green crabs in Netarts Bay and the proposed strategies to address their impacts.”  She goes on to say, “Native shellfish, along with countless other species, are under threat due to the presence of green crabs.”

And what can we do about it? Join the conversation as we tackle these questions with expert visiting scientist, Dr. Sylvia Yamada. With degrees from the University of British Columbia and the University of Oregon, she is a leading voice on the green crab invasion in the Pacific Northwest. Dr. Yamada has worked in salmon research for Fisheries and Oceans Canada and taught at Woods Hole Marine Biological Lab, Wellesley College, the University of Oregon and Oregon State University. Her research interests include predator-prey interactions, the management of invertebrate fisheries, and the impact of introduced species on native communities. She has been following the green crab range expansion since 1998.

Registration is required. Select in-person or virtual ticket(s) when registering. For virtual tickets, the Zoom link will be shared after registration.

Netarts/Oceanside Earth Day Cleanup

Netarts/Oceanside Earth Day Cleanup

Celebrate Earth Day on Saturday, April 19th with the Friends of Netarts Bay Watershed, Estuary, Beach, and Sea (WEBS) by joining us in a beach cleanup from Cape Lookout State Park to Cape Meares and Bayocean Spit.

Winter always brings an influx of marine debris, with storms washing up harmful trash that poses a threat to wildlife and our unique coastal ecosystems. Springtime offers the perfect opportunity for us to unite as a community and restore our beaches. WEBS has been hosting cleanups for decades with SOLVE, an environmental non-profit that evolved from a grassroots initiative into a national model for volunteer environmental stewardship and other local partners. The result of these partnerships makes a positive impact on the health of Netarts Bay and the surrounding areas. “Clean up the beach with friends or family, or expand your community by teaming up with fellow volunteers. Volunteers of all ages will find the beach cleanup fun, educational, and rewarding.” shares Marina Dreeben, WEBS Stewardship Coordinator. “Thanks to the amazing crew at The Schooner Restaurant and Lounge, we will kick off this year’s event with warm drinks and snacks on their deck.”

As you head out to clean up or just explore, it is important to remember that ocean shores can be dangerous. Avoid logs in the water, keep your distance from marine mammals, and never turn your back on the ocean! If you find any hazardous material, please alert a staff member.

Advanced registration saves time but is not required. To register and read more about this event visit http://www.netartsbaywebs.org/events

Oregon Humanities Conversation Project: Softening Sharp Teeth with Emily Squires

Interpersonal conflict and disagreement are part of being in relationship with others, but many of us fear conflict. Motivated by many factors, including cultural norms, concern for social consequences, and personal safety, many of us avoid it. What might we learn and how might we grow by making more room for conflict? What skills do we need to responsibly engage in conflict? How can shifting our relationship to conflict offer us new perspectives about ourselves and the groups we belong to? This community conversation is an opportunity to reflect on our relationships to interpersonal conflict outside of where we might most often encounter it, like the heated context of an argument at the dinner table or online. Facilitator Emily Squires will lead a judgement- and jargon-free discussion of what we mean when we say conflict, considering how interpersonal conflict shapes our lives and tools to use when experiencing it.

Oregon Humanities Conversation Project: What Matters at Life’s End with Wendy Usher

Many of us know we should talk about what matters at the end of our lives, but we don’t always know where or how to start these conversations. Once people start exploring death and dying, they often realize it’s not so scary to talk about after all. It can be comforting and empowering to know more about your options and consider what would be helpful for those who may be making decisions on your behalf. Who do you want with you when you are dying? What environments feel most comfortable? Do you have a preference for what happens to your body and your possessions after you die? How do you want to be remembered? This conversation provides a space and dedicated time for reflecting and exploring your end-of-life wishes.
